Flatmate Moodboard and sketches [WEEK 3]
For this lesson we as a team got together some mood boards and sketches to put in the concept art section of this project. We divided the characters up between us and thought about the role they play in the story and how this may effect their designs. I chose to design the flatmate who lives with the main character.
I imagined that the flatmate would radiate that same feeling of comfort that the main character feels from their dorm, it's a place where they don't feel judged and can be quite free and comfortable in themselves. The flatmate exudes this feeling both within their personality, outfit design, and how they hold themselves. They wear quite loose and baggy clothing that allows them to feel comfortable, their overall appearance is fairly messy but not in the sense that they don't look after themselves but more like they're very laid back about how they present themselves. I wanted them to have quite a boxy silhouette using square shape language to imply a sense of stability and confidence in themselves. They're a sort of character that would go out of their way to make sure you were alright and would try to solve everyone's problems just because they care. I also imagine them to be quite artistic, perhaps being an art or textiles student. This would be reflected in their character design though hand made elements like jewelry and hair beads and hand seen clothing. They would be quite similar to the main character and as such reinforce the feeling of the fear of change, outside of the apartment life is very different to what the main character knows and is used to, meanwhile their apartment and it's inhabitants stay within the realms of what the character is used to. This could maybe convince the player to spend more time with the roommate and, inadvertently, spend more time in the players dorm rather than exploring the campus. I really like the designs I came up with, I think they all give a good feeling of a comfort character.
The mood board and sketches will be useful in the project pipeline as I will pass these on to the character artist. They have final say over the aesthetics of the characters for the game and are responsible for neatening up concepts ready for use, but my sketches might give them an idea of how this character could inevitably look. Eventually when the character designs and personalities are finalized, I can use this to inform my designs for the apartment.
