Reaching Apoapsis - Developing the Angeoforms

Image
What are the Angeoforms and why are they important to the gameplay of Reaching Apoapsis ? Aside from building and managing your crew, another big mechanic within the game is communication and friendship building. In Project Hail Mary , I really enjoyed the concept of having to bridge a large communication gap with another species, and then from there learning more about each other's culture, behaviour, biology and planets. It's really sweet how Grace and Rocky's bond is shared over both of them having to do a seemingly impossible task, and despite their major differences, they share a tight friendship and have each other's backs.  In our other games that include alien species such as Pioneers and Desoter , the aliens within those games fit into two categories: - Many diverse species of aliens that all live together in harmony, their differences are understood and communication is easy between them due to their advanced technology and almost utopia like society. - A h...

Reaching Apoapsis - A card based TTRPG set in space

Image
What is Reaching Apoapsis? - Now that university is over, myself and my partner have started working on a new game system using a method we have never [or rather I have never] tried before. Cards. I think this is a really interesting concept as it means we'll have to think solely within the boundaries of 52 cards as opposed to the standard polyhedral dice. Obviously, we're still in very early development of this idea, but its kinda shaping out to combine mechanics explored in many of our previous games such as Hotel Bunga , Pioneers and even some unreleased stuff we made way back. It'll certainly have some resource/employee management mechanics along with base building, exploration, and a more balanced roleplay to mechanics based system. I'm really excited to be working on this, as I feel it kinda fits more within the stuff I usually like to make, unlike Hotel Bunga which was a big step outside of my comfort zone. My role in this project - I don't exactly have a ...

Capstone Project - Evaluation & posting my game on itch.io

Evaluation - - Research When I first started out with coming up with ideas for my FMP i wanted to make a TTRPG, however I decided to pivot paths a little and make a board game as this is something I have never made before. With that in mind, I made sure to do a lot of research into similar games in the genre I wanted to make which really helped me when it came to developing the mechanics of the game. It was definitely a little scary to work on something I had never attempted before but I actually found the process of researching how games are made and how I could hypothetically make my own games to be really inspiring.  Theming wise, I don't really know why I chose the theme of cavemen and dinosaurs, I wouldn't say I am particularly fascinated by the topic [don't get me wrong dinosaurs are epic but I'm not the world's biggest fan or particularly knowledgeable on the subject] I think maybe I could have done more historical research into these two really distinct tim...
