Reaching Apoapsis - Visiting the local Observatory [Plus some extra notes!]

Image
Sherwood Observatory- The other day I took a trip to Sherwood Observatory again to go see one of their newest planetarium shows. I absolutely love visiting the observatory, its so interesting to not only see their exhibit, but get up close with real astronomical equipment. Granted, I haven't been on the full tour yet [though i intend to when it gets to the darker months!] but regardless I got to see a lot of really cool stuff that definitely has given me some ideas for Apoapsis. For example, I definitely want to do a drawing of the communications base on Gliese 65's exoplanet, i imagine it would be quite small like Sherwood observatory as it would all need to be packed into a little space shuttle that travels from the Apoapsis to the base on Gliese. It would definitely mean me dipping back into 3D modelling again - which now that I think about it my Maya license may  have expired... so it may well be time for me to try out Blender which I have been meaning to do for a while. ...

Reaching Apoapsis - Formatting and switching to Affinity

Image
A big change I made for Reaching Apoapsis was switching formatting software from Scribus to Affinity. Previously, pretty much all of our projects were formatted by Francis as he was the most proficient of the two of us in Scribus [I gave it a go for my capstone project and just could not get a grasp of the UI]. I always kinda wanted to try out formatting for myself but always had some trouble, i was meaning to make the switch a while ago but never did. No idea why??? Switching over to Affinity has been like a breath of fresh air, I love the UI and how easy it is to actually navigate. Also, if for some reason I need to look up something, I don't have to go searching on 10+ year old forum pages which probably don't even have the answer to the specific question I'm looking for. I've been a little bit more ambitious than usual now that I can try out formatting myself and don't have to force poor Francis to work to my vague/nonsensical descriptions of how I would like ...

Reaching Apoapsis - Developing the Angeoforms

Image
What are the Angeoforms and why are they important to the gameplay of Reaching Apoapsis ? Aside from building and managing your crew, another big mechanic within the game is communication and friendship building. In Project Hail Mary , I really enjoyed the concept of having to bridge a large communication gap with another species, and then from there learning more about each other's culture, behaviour, biology and planets. It's really sweet how Grace and Rocky's bond is shared over both of them having to do a seemingly impossible task, and despite their major differences, they share a tight friendship and have each other's backs.  In our other games that include alien species such as Pioneers and Desoter , the aliens within those games fit into two categories: - Many diverse species of aliens that all live together in harmony, their differences are understood and communication is easy between them due to their advanced technology and almost utopia like society. - A h...

Reaching Apoapsis - A card based TTRPG set in space

Image
What is Reaching Apoapsis? - Now that university is over, myself and my partner have started working on a new game system using a method we have never [or rather I have never] tried before. Cards. I think this is a really interesting concept as it means we'll have to think solely within the boundaries of 52 cards as opposed to the standard polyhedral dice. Obviously, we're still in very early development of this idea, but its kinda shaping out to combine mechanics explored in many of our previous games such as Hotel Bunga , Pioneers and even some unreleased stuff we made way back. It'll certainly have some resource/employee management mechanics along with base building, exploration, and a more balanced roleplay to mechanics based system. I'm really excited to be working on this, as I feel it kinda fits more within the stuff I usually like to make, unlike Hotel Bunga which was a big step outside of my comfort zone. My role in this project - I don't exactly have a ...
