Implementing Amiya's music tracks and Final playthrough of our game [WEEK 24]

Image
Page inspiration For our main game page I had a look at some trending games on itch to see how they laid out their pages and what information they included. Below i linked the page that caught my eye the most, i liked their features list and i thought that was a nice way of explaining to our player base what our unique selling point is. I also included some screenshots as itch.io recommended me to do so to increase interest in our game. For the screenshots i selected scenes that showed off some of our characters, more unique scenes, and some scenes with the main character, just enough to give a good feel for our game without giving away the plot. inspiration -   https://pantaloon-io.itch.io/sub-verge our page -  https://nostalgia-studios.itch.io/one-more-week Here is how our page looks :) Adding in the music - https://www.renpy.org/doc/html/audio.html Amiya also sent through her audio files with three files, one for a general ambience, one for more tense moments, and one ...

Toolkit Evaluation

2D toolkit- This year we did more life drawing which i found really beneficial to helping improve my overall gesture and anatomy skills, and i think the approach this year of trying new techniques like working with chalk, swapping hands, focusing on shapes and flow of gesture really helped me when i found myself stuck and unsure of how to improve. I actually found swapping my dominant hand to be a really useful exercise in not getting lost in the details and working more with the larger shapes and forms in a figure. I also did get some use out of working with chalk to identify values, but I don't think it is particularly a medium I would use again, mostly just because of the mess it makes. But i did take away a lot from life drawing this year and I think I've seen an overall improvement in my art because of it, even if just a little bit. We also looked at and improved new skills such as photobashing, tonal values, and new tricks to help with perspective. I thought that the ton...

Arboretum trip

Image
Sketches - For the final session before we broke up for the summer, we took a trip to the Arboretum near the main NTU campus to do some life drawing and generally enjoy the nice weather. We were given a task to draw the cannons, a tree, some wildlife, and something manmade in our sketchbooks. Below i have included my sketches from this trip. I had a little trouble drawing the cannons, we were sat at a weird angle for the first one which made it look a little squat, and my tutor advised me for the second one to follow the rings of the cannon to figure out the angle at which i should have drawn the end. For the more organic shapes i think i did a little better, i tried to work quite quickly to capture their shapes which was definitely a challenge when trying to draw the squirrels. I also caught a quite cute moment of the birds preening one another's feathers, and i also managed to draw a little dog that i saw. On the last page of my sketchbook I drew some of my classmates stood by th...

Project Evaluation - Real worlds

Image
Part 1: Character design, research and game proposal: For the first half of this project, we created a research dossier around Deadzone, licensing and IP usage before moving onto creating character designs to fit in with our chosen factions. I actually really enjoyed looking into the lore of Deadzone, I don't usually like tabletop war games and thus never really looked into the types of games out there but looking into the worldbuilding, genre and analysing the character designs really drew me in and made me feel excited to work on this project. I liked the challenge of identifying what made a faction unique and how to translate that into my own designs, and tying in with this I pushed myself to do something I am not as confident in, that being hard surface designs. I learnt a new approach by utilizing 3D models to draw on top of which massively helped in my idea generation for the Hogg and Swine, I enjoyed the process of making the 3D model as well as figuring out how to render i...

Weird Hope Engines - The Bonington Gallery

Image
On the second to last toolkit session of this year, we took a trip to the Bonington gallery to look at their Weird Hope Engines exhibit. Me and Francis went to the exhibit a few weeks ago but didn't get a full look at everything as the Zine fair was on. It was really inspiring to see the different displays relating to TTRPGs, i especially enjoyed the slide projector with images from  Gackling Moon   which left me feeling really inspired to draw things for my own project in a similar style. I think it was really interesting to see a more artistic approach to TTRPGs, stepping away from traditional D&D, I also saw some work from the creator of Mouth Brood, a zine I bought from the Zine fair a few months ago that explores a lot of body horror and biological themes.  Photograph from the Bonington Gallery website One of the tables in the exhibit was a table with a bunch of prompts on it which you roll to determine what your environment would be like, from there you cou...

Itch.io - https://nostalgia-studios.itch.io/ https://nostalgia-studios.itch.io/one-more-week ArtStation - https://www.artstation.com/nostalgiastudios Research- For the research section, I definitely think there were equal amounts of strengths and weaknesses throughout. In terms of strengths, I think my research into PEGI and target audience for our game was quite good, I tried to look into not only the age range, but who exactly would be playing our game, as well as looking into generally why its important to identify target markets in general.  For the art style benchmarks of our game I think you can really see the influence of monster prom and life is strange throughout, we tried to capture that bubbly and eye catching sprite style of monster prom that appeals to younger audiences whilst also incorporating the almost nostalgic, dreamy feel of life is strange into our game.  However for gameplay benchmarks, I realize I could have included some coverage of the game Class...

Implementing my team's assets [WEEK 24]

Image
Chat bubbles - This week I implemented some of the assets that Niamh has made, She finalized all of the character sprites within the game as well as made some chat bubble variants to add an extra layer of interest during the chat and videocall scenes. I really like how this just adds an extra layer of emotional context to the scenes and requested Niamh to make some versions of anna if she had time. As a team we agreed this is a great method of showing a character's emotions without having the full sprite on screen. Below is the first iteration without the anna sprite. This is the revised version with the Anna sprite. We also decided to have a different bubble for Richie for when he is talking on the videocall, just to differentiate it from the main chat bubbles. Adding in Willow, Benji and the new character sprites - Following on from this, the chat bubble idea worked really well to express character's emotions and we decided as a team to have this as a replacement for the main...
