Toolkit Evaluation

 2D toolkit-

This year we did more life drawing which i found really beneficial to helping improve my overall gesture and anatomy skills, and i think the approach this year of trying new techniques like working with chalk, swapping hands, focusing on shapes and flow of gesture really helped me when i found myself stuck and unsure of how to improve. I actually found swapping my dominant hand to be a really useful exercise in not getting lost in the details and working more with the larger shapes and forms in a figure. I also did get some use out of working with chalk to identify values, but I don't think it is particularly a medium I would use again, mostly just because of the mess it makes. But i did take away a lot from life drawing this year and I think I've seen an overall improvement in my art because of it, even if just a little bit.

We also looked at and improved new skills such as photobashing, tonal values, and new tricks to help with perspective. I thought that the tonal value lesson was extremely useful, This is something i have struggled with when it comes to values in my composition, and whilst i still have a lot to learn, I do feel like i understand it a bit more and i have been actively studying and improving the tonal values in all the pieces i have been doing going forward. I will say that i still struggle with placing objects and drawing scenes freehand in perspective so i will practice over summer to build up this vital skill.

Throughout the year i have implemented skills into my own work, and i overall feel like i have improved a lot with life drawing and pose studies. I would like to improve on texturing and colour usage in the future as well as making more interesting designs on a whole. I would also like to practice more environment art, combined with 3D draw overs I'm feeling more confident to try something new and experiment a bit more with how i draw backgrounds for my artwork.

3D toolkit-

3D toolkit i will admit I really struggled with throughout this year, I will say that i think i have improved my sculpting skills, use of tools in Zbrush, and retopology through help and guidance in 3D toolkit sessions. I tried to take as many notes and try new things just so that i have a guide to help myself in the future.

That being said through, I certainly have a  LOT more to learn. I'm still feeling very uneasy about 3D art as a whole, I think the process of 3D asset creation is very different to what I am used to working 2D, and i found that the process is not very forgiving to mistakes that come back to bite me later on. I did try to push myself with 3D modelling this year as I know this is something I have struggled with right the way from college to now. I did a lot of 3D modelling for building alliances, Real worlds, and also made some models in my free time. They are admittedly not completely optimized for games, but i found them to be good practice for 3D draw overs which combines a subject i feel a little more confident in with something i really struggle with. I like this midground of building up my 3D skills to help my 2D skills, so i think whilst 3D asset creation might not be the path for me going forward, i do really like implementing 3D models into my 2D work and i think i will do a bit of that next year.

I found first sculpting project alright, I enjoyed learning new skills and implementing them, and overall I am very happy with final outcome. Last part of the project however, caused me a lot of stress, I didn't enjoy it at all and i am disappointed with how many things went wrong. I tried my best but i feel like even though i did, its not very good. I had a lot of trouble grasping every step of the process and trying to implement that into my model whilst still trying to learn where i was going wrong was really difficult. I Might try again in the future but i'm not sure, Its still something i'm thinking on. I will say though, despite all the mistakes that I made, I learned a lot from these errors and how to avoid them in the future, and i think learning through mistakes is a really valuable skill to have.

Below i will attach some links to Sketchfab for models I made this year in my free time, some of them are textured, and some are just models that i made to draw over.

Here is the final model for toolkit, sadly i was unable to include the rig as it was distorted after i reloaded my final file, I really don't know why it did this :(
