Plant sprite assets [WEEK 12]

Image
Using the technique from my previous post, coupled with some 3D modelling aspects i was able to create all of my small plant concepts as sprites that will be used to populate the environment. I really love the mixture of 2D and 3D elements and i think some, especially the pitcher plant, rafflesia, and starfruit look really effective and interesting. Throughout my process i have been uploading the flat pngs and the OBJ files onto my group's discord and onedrive, that way if anything does go wrong i have the base elements that make up these assets so that i can more effectively troubleshoot in unreal engine if necessary. I wanted to make a range of more simple and more detailed plants so that environments dont just have big 3D modelled trees and small board assets that are entirely 2D, i think by having this nice middle ground i can vary the heights and textures in a scene better. Here are all of the plants i have made : Passionflower - Pitcher Plant - Small Shrub - Baby Palm - Shal...

2D asset - Tamarisk [WEEK 12]

Image
Tamarisk - The first 2D asset i made was this tamarisk plant based off of one of the concept sketches i made. I was unsure on how to make something like this so generally everything i did was very much trial and error, since i wasn't able to find many tutorials on how to do this in maya, it resulted in a lot of mistakes. My first step was to gather some reference material from some games i have played and make notes on how they tackled ground foliage, I specifically selected 3 games that i knew had a specific technique to making these types of models, those being Webfishing (Lamedeveloper 2024), Minecraft (Mojang 2011), and The Sims 4 (Maxis 2014). I guessed that these types of models are probably made using planes that intersect, so my next approach was to create the 2D image that will go onto my plane, generally i kept it very symmetrical, as this is my first test model i wanted to see how it would look on something fairly simple before i went ahead and made something more c...

Potted Pinecone [WEEK 11]

Image
Final Textured Asset Base model Orthographic Comparing my orthographic to my final model i did made a few changes in regards to how the petals and the overall "pinecone" section attaches to the vine like stem. I made the petals a little more spread out to make them more readable and added a smaller stem to also make the overall silhouette both more interesting and easy to read. I would say this is one of my favourite models i have made and overall is one of the more interesting shapes. Overall i followed the same technique of using cylinders that have been extruded to get a pretty low poly model. I think if i would have kept my final model as the same as my orthographic, i probably wouldnt have liked it as much and i think a lot of the details that are in the pink top section would have been lost, so i am very glad i made this change. Gantt Chart - With this model finished, it brings me up to half of my models being completed roundabout. I think i am still working to my sch...

Cheetah and Fennec fox [WEEK 12]

Image
Cheetah - The cheetah was the very last of the designs that Faye drew that i turned into a journal sketch and of all of the creatures i think this one is by far my favourite. I think the colour pallet she chose in the end works really well and looks overall very pleasing to the eye. I had a little trouble with the anatomy, especially trying to make the more fluffy neck look believable, all in all though i am very happy with this design and i honestly really enjoyed making these creatures. Fennec Fox - For the fennec fox I did come across a bit of a setback in which, after i had finished the original black and white render i went to make a layer above it which i could use as an alpha lock for the colours. When sorting out my layers i accidentally merged the alpha lock layer and the rendering layer, as this happened my software autosaved and i was unable to undo this merge, i neglected to save the file previously, so all in all i lost two hours of work and had to restart :(. This w...
