Capstone Project - Bonus artwork

Image
Cave building - This is a bonus piece of artwork I made for hotel bunga just to advertise the project on my instagram page! I also intend to post this on my itch.io page for Hotel Bunga's digital download to provide a bit more interest about my game. I decided to go with the concept of the cavepeople building the cave in reference to the main mechanic of my game, I included the characters Gremmie the Thumper and Rok the Gatherer as they are some of my favourite employee designs [it was important I chose employees over clients as this makes the most sense with the gameplay of Hotel Bunga]. In the background, one of my friends designed a little persona of themselves inspired by hotel bunga, they did this a while ago just because they loved the idea of my game! so, I decided to take their little design and turn them into a background character representing the player! In the box by their feet is a handful of materials representing the flora and fauna tokens, transferring more game me...

Capstone Project: Manufacture setbacks

Image
Printing my own cards: Although I would have liked to have had my game printed professionally for the Gradfest event, even if I had ordered it last week it wasn't 100% guaranteed to arrive by the 8th. Instead, I decided to print and put together my own cards using the online prototypes i put together. I chose these as they already had an outline on them and I wouldnt have to worry about cutting out each of the cards individually and making sure they are all the right size.  I put all of my cards on an A4 sheet format so that they would all line up, I was going to print double sided but any slight difference in the image lineup would mean that there would be alignment errors. Plus, cutting and sticking the backs and fronts separately makes for stronger cards. Below are the files for my cards. [as you can see, the background on this one is different to the other furniture cards. Evidently, I did not see this at the time.... You will see what happened with this in a moment...] A...

Capstone Project - Token Considerations

Image
Manufacture considerations- There are 160 tokens in my game, 40 fauna tokens, 40 flora tokens, 40 energy tokens, and 40 money tokens. I was thinking of how I would like to include these within my game. I want to avoid using any 3d printed or plastic pieces as I want to keep my product as environmentally friendly as possible. I was looking into some options and I have 4 [2 of which are quite unique] options for how I would approach making these tokens in my game. My first option - Glass cabochons: I could print off some images on card and glue them to the bottom of the cabochons to represent each of the token types. This is a cheap way to make custom tokens but would be somewhat labour intensive. Appearance - 4/5 Price - 2/5 Difficulty to assemble - 4/5 My second option - Painted pebbles: I love this idea, I think its very unique and fits so well with the theme of my game. Pebbles are cheap to buy in bulk however painting each individual pebble would take so long. I would say to se...

Capstone Project - Box Art

Image
Manufacturing considerations - As a stretch goal one of the things I wanted to consider making for my project is a box to hold my game. Hayman creative offers a good box printing service and I like how they have templates readily available for all of their models of boxes. Looking at the maximum size of my cards, I selected size 4 as my option as I feared anything smaller and the cards at best would be a very snug fit, and at worst wouldn't fit at all. For this size, I originally thought about doing just the plain board on the inside however I think the black board inside would look much better [as this is a prototype that I could potentially be using to help crowdfund my game in the future I want it to look as polished as possible]. This does tack on a bit to the price admittedly, but I think it's worth it for a nice looking product. As for the actual artwork, I chose the matt laminated with graphics on the lid and base, This is the cheapest option that covers the whole box, ...

Capstone Project - Player Manual

Image
Pages - Using the information I had put on my paper maquette I put together an instructional manual for my game. I want my manual to be printed on an a4 piece of paper folded in half like a card, giving me 4 a5 pages to put information on. To maximize space, I opted out of having a front cover [however I could make a sleeve [another A4 piece of paper folded in the same way] that has art work on it later on? When it came to organizing the information, I started with: Setup and pieces [plus a bonus contextual paragraph at the very top] Money and energy, and introducing cave attributes Employees and furniture, and how this links to the cave attributes mentioned prior. Action cards, hunting and gathering, and of course, how to win. I remember a while ago people adding a No AI generated work icon onto physical products, I really like this idea especially as I feel so strongly about the importance of human made work. This icon is a free to use asset made by Hinokodo on itch.io that you can p...
