Capstone Project: Manufacture setbacks

 Printing my own cards:

Although I would have liked to have had my game printed professionally for the Gradfest event, even if I had ordered it last week it wasn't 100% guaranteed to arrive by the 8th. Instead, I decided to print and put together my own cards using the online prototypes i put together. I chose these as they already had an outline on them and I wouldnt have to worry about cutting out each of the cards individually and making sure they are all the right size.

I put all of my cards on an A4 sheet format so that they would all line up, I was going to print double sided but any slight difference in the image lineup would mean that there would be alignment errors. Plus, cutting and sticking the backs and fronts separately makes for stronger cards. Below are the files for my cards.

[as you can see, the background on this one is different to the other furniture cards. Evidently, I did not see this at the time.... You will see what happened with this in a moment...]

Assembling the cards -

I then headed over to the print shop and got them printed on 216 gsm paper, and cut them out and stuck them together. This did result in less than perfect cards but I think they'll do fine for the submission! This also gave me a preview of what my cards would look like when professionally printed and I have to say I am really really proud of how they turned out! I will definitely be investing in a more polished pack.

As for my aforementioned mistake... as you can see, I was rushing and didn't notice I printed the wrong backs on this set of furniture cards. This means I am going to have to go back to the print shop and get another set of these printed. LUCKILY, this is just a problem with these mockup cards, my actual final PDF versions are all correct, so in the future i will make sure to double check all my work is correct before printing.

This wasn't all bad, I did mess up cutting one of the card backs so I used the extra on this page to fix that mistake. Plus, price wise it only cost me 65p per sheet so really its not the end of the world that I messed up just one set of the cards. Other than this, the cards look great! and I'm so excited to be able to hold a physical version of all the work I've made.

Player boards -

I also managed to get some laminated player boards made by someone at my mum's work, I am very grateful she managed to get this done for me as the company I was going to order through would more than likely have not delivered the product for submission date.

Putting together a box -

I also got a manual printed [it was supposed to be on one a4 sheet but I miscommunicated with the person at the print shop so now it is on 2 a4 sheets placed vertically, but honestly this is fine as it makes the text easier to read especially if i am going to do a quick display of this at gradfest. I think for my final version i will split my information across 2 folded a4 sheets giving me extra room for a larger font size.

As for the box, although it isn't printed, my mum said that she knows how to transfer an image onto a pre-printed box [I'm not sure how you do that but she's done it before] just so i have a proof of concept that will be ready for gradfest. All I needed to do on my end was ensure I had all the graphics for the front, side and bottom of the box placed onto a file at the correct dimensions for the box she bought online.

I hope this works as I think it will be really nice to have a box for my final submission.

You can also see two bags on this image, one contains black and white energy and money pebbles, and the other contains painted red and green pebbles for fauna and flora tokens. This is a fun concept but now seeing it in person I think I will go for paper tokens for my polished version in the future as it was a bit of a pain painting all the pebbles. I really love this idea for my personal version though and i'm glad I did it because it fits so well with the theme of my game.

Trello -

Although things didn't go exactly as I had planned in preparation for final submission, I still have something to hand in and something that I am immensely proud of. To say this is my first experience with making a full board game I'm very pleased with the work I have done for this project!

I do have a bit of time before submission, so I do intend to make some bonus artwork for this project just to post on my business page!
