MPG brief - Thumbnails Continued [Week 2]

Image
I looked at some more asymmetrical designs for the shackled tree that the princess lies within, I really love the idea of a split tree with lighting/magic still coursing through it, i think this makes for a really interesting visual and makes it much more unique than just a simple princess trapped within a tree. I ended up liking design 5 the best and so decided to go ahead with this as my final choice. Here is a more detailed sketch of my thumbnail And some colour iterations I asked some of my peers which of these designs they liked best, the answer ending up being a mixture of 3 and 4. The black and red certainly works well to show that this character is a dangerous being, and the greed combined with this provided contrasting colours and draws the eye better to the lighting from afar. https://www.english-heritage.org.uk/guide-to-heraldry I had a look at how medieval suits of arms were designed and decided to try out some designs that would be representative of the princesses fam...

MPG Brief - Thumbnails continued [Week 1]

Image
Here are some more thumbnails exploring different crowns, colour pallets and general silhouettes. At this point I'm just testing out different styles and seeing what looks nice together. I'm having some trouble choosing so i think what i will do next is draw my figure in the tree and try some combinations of clothing and crowns with everything all together. I think seeing everything in one drawing can help me decide which elements work best, where to put the most detail to draw the eye, and trying out some colour pallets to see which is the most eye catching. Some body and outfit considerations Looking into silhouettes for trees Some colour iterations for her face [ i think i will likely go for either 1 or 2]

MPG Brief - Moodboards & Observational sketches [Week 1]

Image
Mood boards: Using the suggestions my peers and tutor gave me, I put together a mood board of all the visual references i want to incorporate into my design. I really like the concept of the princess being one with the woods around her, tangling into a mess of limbs, bark and roots. With this in mind, I looked at a variety of topics from real life woods and forests, the famous chained trees of the Major Oak and the Alton towers tree [the chains on this tree in particular are a big inspiration to me], as well as zombies, depictions of tree spirits and some similar creatures within video games. I also annotated my mood board with some ideas i had in mind when gathering my images. Annotated mood board Gathering visual references: To help build my visual library further, I decided to go out and get some photos of the woodlands around where i live, there are three trees in particular near where i live that i wanted to look at, they both have a lot of different textures on them as well as tw...

MPG Brief - Responding to the brief [Week 1]

Image
Brief: The brief given to us is to be completed within 4/5 weeks, We are to choose from one of the given prompts and create concept art for either a character or an environment relating to the topic. We should provide the client with each step of our creative process, thumbnails, design iterations, and all steps towards a final concept piece. On top of this , we should provide a short justification for our designs. This should be formatted as either a PowerPoint, pdf, a dropbox with all files, or a link to an Artstation page. My response to the brief: Of the prompts given, i decided to explore the topic of "Evil Princess", as I usually opt towards working on something sci-fi related, i wanted to take a different direction this time and maybe look at something based more around fantasy / fantasy horror. You will see later I do explore sci-fi very briefly in one of my ideas but ultimately I think I am going to opt towards a more dark fantasy feel. Below are my notes on differen...
