Character turnaround sheets Pre-client feedback

Image
The Rebs "Katya" : Combining some of the elements I liked the best and were voted the best from my thumbnail sketches i used them to put together a front and back view for the final character sheet. I made both a grayscale value sketch along with a coloured version with equipment block outs. For now i have left these quite rough just in case the client wants me to make any changes to my character design, I think i will also try to make a side profile shot and overall neaten up the appearance of the character sheet if i have time. Considering my genre justification i kept with a very slimline and agile looking design suited best for a melee based character build with her primary weapon being her fish hook and her secondary or special attack being her collar of which she throws over her enemies. Too on the very last iteration of the character sheet i included a zoom in of her facial scars and a colour wheel to help me when it comes to creating my character art. I also included...

Life Drawing 5

Image
1 Minute Warmup Sketches - This week's life drawing session we focused on material and folds on the human figure, the model came in wearing a quite loose fitting dress along with a scarf so that we could study the folds of the fabric. For our 1 minute sketches i focused only on the visible folds in the fabric, sketching them out and then refining the human form a little more afterwards. I feel like this worked somewhat well and i especially like the first sketch on the first image, the first sketch on the second image, and the second sketch on the third image. I think i captured the poses best in these sketches and i like how interesting the folds were, it was fairly easy to identify the pinch points on these poses too. Not having to focus on the full figure was also much less stressful in only 1 minute. 3 Minute Sketches - Moving onto the 3 minute sketches i found some of these quite challenging, having the most trouble with the reclined/lying down poses. As stated before this i...

Character design 2 - Quasar

Image
Silhouettes - For this character design I already had a pretty clear idea of what I wanted to make, earlier in the week I had sketched out this really fluffy monster type character that I thought would be quite interesting to model in Z brush, with my sketch as a guide i put together some variant silhouettes that still kept the overall fluffy design but had some differences in terms of height, body shape and features. I really liked the second one on the bottom row and as such i made some iterations of this design, giving them a high ponytail, antennae and plantigrade legs. I wasn't sure if we have to rig this character later on so I thought i would go with a plantigrade design just in case that way I wouldn't have to further stress over figuring out the handles and controls for a digitigrade body. In the end I decided to use a variation of the last design for my final idea. Outfit Iterations - With this design selected, I put together a set of 4 outfits that i thought i migh...

Edited MC room and desk background [WEEK 15]

Image
Thinking about IP infringement I decided to edit out the little alien toy on the main character's bed just in case this could pose some issues. I might replace it with a different unique toy later on but for now i think i might just leave it blank. Using the feedback i got from my desk sketches I used them to create the final scene to be put in the game, because i have already defined the background image "desk" i just have to go into the images folder of the One more week game file and save over the placeholder image. I wanted to include a lot of little details that tells the viewer a bit more about the main character and their personality, straight out the gate it is probably very obvious that the main character enjoys space and alien themed items with the prevalent use of alien imagery, stars, spaceships and planets. I also wanted to portray them as being an artistic character with the various art supplies thrown messily on their desk, this also somewhat links to thei...

Hunterian Trip Photographs and Observational Drawings

Image
[[WARNING : This post will contain photographs of Wet specimens of humans parts and Animals] On Tuesday we took a trip to London to visit the Hunterian Museum, Whilst there I decided to draw some of the specimens that were on display and were of interest to me. I was only able to sketch a few of the exhibits as it was quite busy and although i was having a nice time i felt very overwhelmed and as such I wasn't able to draw as much as i would have liked to. Some of my favourite exhibits were the big Asian elephant brain right at the very front [ I had no idea they were so big, it was very fascinating to see all the lobes of the brain and all the individual wrinkles], The Hippo skull [It had an almost alien like appearance and although i had seen photos of one before it was cool to see one in person], and the monkey head. I wasn't able to draw a lot of the exhibits in the main hall but I did manage to get a lot of photos of which i would like to use as reference for some art in t...

Maya Rigging part 2 [The leg Controls]

Image
Following on from last lesson we first covered how to create controls that will be used to help move our character rig. To start out we need to select nurbs geometry/primitives. NURBS are very good to work with when it comes to animations as they do not show up in renders. To make the foot control, start by making nurbs circle, You can do this by entering the create tab, selecting NURBS primitives, then selecting circle. We will need to shape it to represent the foot, then hold down C and snap it under the bridge pivot. Hold down D and V and snap pivot to stabilizer After you have done this, make sure you keep everything neat by deleting by type and selecting history, also make sure to freeze transformations [which is on the top row and looks like snowflake]. This just ensures everything is neat and easy to traverse. Now moving onto making the foot control more foot shaped we need to take into consideration Maya's selection preferences so that we ensure we are selecting the right t...

Desk and Kitchen sketches [WEEK 17]

Image
Kitchen - I had an idea of using Maya to help me block out the environments much quicker and more accurately then drawing on top of my screenshots to add in additional details. I tried this first with the kitchen scene, wanting to make a very standard student kitchen just made a bit more homely and detailed with elements reflecting the personalities of both the main character and the room mate. I added a lot of sun and nature decals to all of these scenes whilst still making it seem believable that students live here with messy worktops and full sinks. This method of planning out the scenes in maya first really helped to not only ensure everything stayed in scale, but i can also move around the scene meaning if we needed a shot from a different angle yet still in the same room, things would stay consistent and more believable. As our director is quite proficient at 3D modelling too, i proposed that this could be something he could work on if he felt there were few jobs for him lef...

Alpha testing and link to latest build - [WEEK 17]

Image
During this week's session I had one of the members of my team Alpha test the latest build of our game, as most of my team has been very busy I haven't had the chance to get any feedback on how the game plays so I wanted this lesson time to be the time to ensure someone got to see the project. I have been Beta testing [just on functionality and bug identification so far, i will release a proper beta test in the future along with a feedback document] with one of my friends in order to find any issues. During the Alpha test, Niamh identified a few errors: -A define statement error linked to the variable benjimad - Missing dialogue between the roommate and sweaters on thursday - Incorrect message popping up linking to the arguement between sweaters and benji event that hadn't happened in this playthrough -Missing textures for benji's room Here are some photos i took of the error screens: To fix these errors, this is what i did: I used jump statements to avoid repeating di...
