Game Art style Concepts and Micah Lidberg study. [WEEK 3]

Asa a suggestion by the director of the team i was advised to make a style guide so that all members of the team would be able to replicate the style so that they can help create artwork that will stay in line with the overall look of the game. To create this guide i selected three art pieces by Micah Lidberg that i wanted to take inspiration from, i then colour picked the hues within the pieces to identify how the artist uses colour in each of the pieces. For the top piece i noticed that the artist uses more desaturated tones and a lot of blues and purples, whereas in the bottom pieces the colours are more saturated and bright. I also highlighted the shapes that are most used in these pieces along with the patterns the artist uses frequently. Along with this i also looked into what brushes i could use to replicate the artist's work, i found the cloud and acrylic sponge brush on Firealpaca worked best to create this look. Something else to note about the artist is that they dont use the colour black, anything that looks like black is actually a very dark blue which i think adds to the cohesiveness of the colour pallete.

With this on hand, I wanted to create a piece in the style of the artist using my observations. As Lidberg takes inspiration from nature, i selected my subject as being a tiger sat in the rainforest. I first found a reference image off of google and sketched out the basic shape, Lidberg keeps a mostly accurate art style just with less detail and no lighting or shading so i made sure to keep as accurate as possible, only really adding a slight bit of stylization. Then with my pen brush, with the pressure sensitivity turned off so that my line weights are all the same, i created my line art in a deep blue colour. The style of this piece is specifically based off of the top piece entitled ZABA. To block in the foliage in the background i used the lasso fill tool and roughly drew out the shapes and locations of plants and trees to frame the tiger. Lidberg's artwork is quite crowded and hard to distinguish at first to i tried to fill the space as much as possible whilst still allowing the content of the artwork to be visible. Once i had also created the line art for the background, i placed in my colours using the top colour wheel. I also added a texture filter onto the piece to make it seem like it is drawn on paper. I am very happy with this drawing and i think i captured the style somewhat well, It is my hope that my guide will help my team recreate this art style in an easy and understandable way.
