For this project I have been assigned to be the Environment artist, this means that it is my job to create the environments that will be put into the final game. I will be given concepts by the concept artist to develop and finalize into finished assets that will be used. Often Environment artists will work in 3D and need to have a knowledge on software such as maya, Substance painter and Unreal engine, but for our project we will be creating a 2D game so I will only need to use a 2D drawing software . Environment artists need to help tell a story through a setting (Screenskills 2024), so understanding the characters and storyline is very important to be able to visually represent the setting. They should also have a good understanding of perspective, lighting and composition of scenes. I personally feel I have a decent grasp on lighting and perspective, and I am working to get better at my compositional skills. I decided to go for this role to push myself to try something new, I usually feel most confident when designing characters and I feel very intimidated by backgrounds so I think forcing myself to focus only on backgrounds may help me to develop my skills in this area.
