Thumbnails and iterative designs of plants [WEEK 4]

 Small Plants -

For the small plants i referred back to my observational sketches and used a mixture of the characteristics that i identified to create these plants. I wanted them to seem as though the Sahara plants had adapted to live in this new slightly cooler but more damp ecosystem and as such most of the plants would lose that hard and woody exterior, instead replacing it with colourful leaves and interesting shapes to draw in insects and pollinators. Some plants are fruit bearing such as 4, 5, 10, 11, and 12. These fruits would be much sweeter than their Saharan counterparts, containing many seeds to ensure they have a higher chance of being spread around the jungle floor. I also made some carnivorous plants such as 3, 7, 13, 14 and 15. These plants either lure in bugs with their sweet scent and trap them within their structures, or rely on sharp poisonous spines to paralyse their prey and digest their rotting bodies. Of these designs i am most happy with designs 4, 10 and 15, which my team also seems to agree. These will likely be the plants i do the journal entries on, however the other plants may be used to help populate the rainforest floor.

Feedback -
Faye - "2, 4 are probably my faves!"

Niamh - "Yeaa I really like design 4 too, I really like 5, 6 and 10 - I think 3 and 7 make for good plants that would fill up some empty spaces"

Niamh - "I also like design 15 as it has that scary vibes to it but also kind of looks like it has a tail which makes it appear a bit animalistic which I like"

Medium Plants -

For the medium plants, i also considered different environments in which these plants may reside in. For example i made some water dwelling plants such as lily pads and reeds, Some fungi living on trees, and some vines that will hang from the canopy and grow fruit for taller creatures to eat. I also considered some plants that would live in symbiosis with other creatures. For example, 10 and 11 are both plants that give homes to other animals and either rely on these creatures for pollination or for keeping the plant safe. Number 10 has a wiry stamen and sharp upwards pointing spikes that act as protection for a birds eggs from aerial predators. Meanwhile, number 11 has a pseudo bees hive fruit that is sweet to draw in a potential swarm. The bees that live within this fruit not only act as pollinators for nearby trees but the honey they produce is used by the tree to grow taller, and thus making more bee hives for more swarms to inhabit. I really like this idea of a symbiotic relationship with the jungle creatures and the plant life, i think this could also lend to the theory that everything that lives in the new Sahara was engineered to slot perfectly into this new environment. It seems the Vines with cashew apple like fruits on it, the lily pad and the bees hive tree are some of the more popular plants that i have made.

Niamh - "I quite like the mushroom like plants sitting on a surface, and the hanging plant with the red to it - one again i think these could have some cool demonstration of information plus they just have a cool design :)) "

Sebastian - "I like 7, 9 and 14"

Large Plants -

As for the Large plants i wanted to explore a range of different leaf shapes and trunk shapes that would make up the canopy of the new Sahara. Some of these plants offer wide coverage from the sun and vines that allow water to trickle down to the jungle floor, meanwhile others have sharper leaves that allow rain to run off much better. A lot of these trees have very thin branches that cross over one another which would provide a good habitat to tree dwelling creatures. Of these designs my favourites are number 3,6 and 13 as i think they have the most unique designs and would really stand out amongst the other trees.

Sasha - "these ones [1 and 13] are really pretty and idk what these are for but it makes me think of a tropical biome"

The next step in the pipeline is use the feedback on what plants people want to see most to create splash pages with information pertaining to each of the plants and what makes them special. This will then allow the team to maybe model these plants or create more refined 2D assets that will be placed in the game.
