Postcard [WEEK 6]

To add our own little personal touches to this project, we decided we would all create a postcard as sort of a loading screen splash art in our own style. The postcards would include the main character [each of our different interpretations of him as we didn't want to give him a solid design] and some sort of tip or fact about the game. For mine I included the beehive tree, giving the player a warning not to get too close or act too carelessly around it, lest they face the wrath of it's inhabitants. I had a few other ideas for designs originally, I was having some trouble picking which i liked best so i got some feedback from people in our class. Here are the rough sketches i started out with and roughly what I wanted them to depict.

Feedback -

Katie - "I’m drawn to top left and bottom right, top left because of the composition and leading lines but bottom right because the size difference between the human and animal showing how people are more strong and powerful then animals and they hold more status but they can also have a soft spot"

Lowenna - "I was looking independently of Katie but I was thinking the exact same two, mostly because I think depicting an event rather than just a scene makes them that much more engaging, and I can picture the top left being a more viable photo opportunity than the bottom left "

Sasha - "i quite like the bottom right one as the composition is really appealing as well as that, id love to see how youd mess with the layers of the background, the characters in the middle and the foliage in the forefront. and still have the characters be the main focus. the plants frame them really well"

Niamh - "I think my favourite overall would be bottom right and in an example of the loading screen we can put some fun info text like "top tip: not all animals are scary if respected" or something"

As I had narrowed it down to the top left and bottom right, I decided I would go with the top left as i thought it's composition was more interesting and i had a very strong idea of how the drawing would look. Using the reference image beside my sketch, i worked on making a more refined sketch using the technique I learnt in 2D toolkit.

1st pass, using the image as a direct reference
2nd pass, using my sketch as reference

Final sketch and background
As this piece is in my own art style as opposed to emulating Micah Lidberg's style, I mostly followed the same formula as i always do for my art. I have opted to change a few things from my style, i now prefer to do my lineart with the marker brush, and i have also turned off brush stabilization. This does give be less of a smooth result but i feel i have more freedom and control over my lines, with time and practice my lines will get less shaky, but in truth i quite like the slight wobble. I also used the lasso fill tool quite a bit in the background, i feel it helps shapes look more organic, then when i go back in with the marker brush to extend the colour outside of the lines it makes my background elements look less harsh without having to blur the background. One thing i noticed very far into the drawing is i should have moved the directions of the tassels to imply more movement and that he is running, however i noticed this right at the very end of the drawing so this is just something i will have to bare in mind for next time as i dont have the time to fix this before the presentation. I really loved this idea of all of us showcasing our individual art styles and i think this makes for a really cute version of a credits page.
