Folds and gestural work

 Fold Types -

In this exercise i went back over some folds that we learned last year, i made sure to consider where the pinch points would be on some of these and how the fabric will fall in relation to this. The main thing to take away from this exercise and everything after this in the observational sketch phase is to keep things loose and gestural to preserve the movement of the fabric.

Observational Sketches -

Here i used the references provided on the power point to create some observational sketches, keeping that gestural feel in mind. Aside from the first two, I drew these using only one line that way i could focus on the overall folds rather than focusing all my attention on all the little details. In my opinion i found the thinner more loose fabric much easier to draw than the tighter fitting suits on the kilt reference, i think this was a very helpful exercise for me to be able to draw cloth over figures more accurately as i find i focus on making it very neat in the final product and loose a lot of that movement in the fabric. Of all the types of folds i found the zig zag and spiral to be quite challenging, as these are often found on sleeves and trouser legs , a lot of the movement in a pose can be inferred with these folds so i think it is important for me to have another go at this.
