Observational sketches / Life Drawing

Life Drawing -

For the first 10 minutes of this lesson we were tasked to draw a subject from life, that being Francis sitting on a sofa. I found this task very tricky and i think i spent a bit too long on the sofa than the model which honestly made me a bit sad, i tried to get some rough shapes down but in the end didnt have much time to define any solid features. To sort of have another go at this i tried to draw him when we sat back down in class, i think i had a much better time trying to capture his features. Admittedly i find these tasks very difficult, when viewing images from life i struggle to see shapes and forms in objects and thus struggle to translate that into a drawing, i find this interesting because i don't usually have this issue when it comes to looking at 2 dimensional images. Capturing images from life is a very important skill as it provides you with a completely accurate model to work from in which you can see forms, shadows and textures in greater detail.

Observational sketches -

Moving on from this, our next task was to capture spaces and people from life. We were divided into groups and assigned a floor to visit and draw areas of, my team was given the ground floor of confetti, below are some areas we drew.

Outside confetti
I found this task to be a little easier than the previous life drawing task as i think i do better with still shapes than things that are moving, that being said i still came across that issue of being unable to really identify shapes in a 3D scene so most of these sketches are more rough than i would have liked. In the outside confetti piece i drew a few figures i saw, i found this a bit easier than i thought it would be, most of these people were wearing quite loose and baggy clothes so drawing in those creases made it much quicker and easier to quickly sketch down their poses. Of the three drawings i think either the corridor or the reception are my favourite, i think i added the most detail in these two and they look closest to reality, however i really struggled with the wide open space of confetti's exterior and the road especially gave me some trouble. Perhaps drawing out a perspective grid might help me translate these shapes easier than my method of blocking out large shapes.

Homework Task-

For our homework task we had to draw an interior scene somewhere in our home, and a scene out and about that might have people in it. For the interior scene i chose to draw my living room with focus on the fireplace as i thought this might be quite an interesting thing to draw, there are quite a lot of square shapes in my living room so this was quite easy to capture, however much like my previous observational sketches i struggled understanding placements of things as i didnt have a solid canvas to break up into segments, overall i think it looks alright but it is clear some areas are quite cramped, especially around the left of the fireplace. In the second out and about sketch i went to sit with my mum on the information point at clumber park as i knew this place would have a lot of people i could draw and some natural elements in the background i could attempt to draw. This sketch admittedly looks quite sparse and i think i could have probably chosen a more interesting view, but in terms of capturing people in motion i focused on a woman looking at a flowerbed and someone walking their dog, i think this turned out alright and i used my technique from before to try to capture the wrinkles in the woman's clothes so that i could draw her form much quicker.
