Life Drawing 2

 1 Minute Warmup Sketches -

For this weeks life drawing lesson i did something different to usual, as my right hand was in a bit of pain due to an injury i decided to switch to using my non dominant left hand for this lesson. Immediately upon doing this the biggest thing i noticed was the shakiness of my lines and how difficult it was to get those scaffolds down, however despite it looking more messy, i actually found i was able to work more gesturally than i normally would. I struggled at first but after the exercise where we focused more on negative space and the shapes of the body as a whole, i decided to take a different approach to how i constructed my figures. I ignored the scaffold and tried to focus more on making larger marks, blocking out the negative space which was much easier than trying to make all the tiny details.

5 Minute Sketches -

I continued with this method of looking at the general shapes and gesture of the figure still using my left hand and actually found that i was much happier with these drawings than the previous week, i still had a bit of trouble getting the proportions right in some of the poses, but on the whole this approach made drawing some of the reclined poses much easier to do. Some of my favourites are the one where the figure is reclining on her back with the knees in the foreground and her arms behind her head, the one where she is twisted with the back to the viewer whilst sitting up, and the one below that one to the right. These 5 minute sketches gave me more time to better define the body as a whole, and whilst my lines are still shaky, they are much easier to read than the 1 minute sketches.

10 Minute Sketches -

The last selection of sketches we did were the 10 minute sketches, these, much like the ones before, allowed me to put more detail into the forms. I did find these poses a little more challenging [ the top right one was entirely my fault for picking a peculiar angle to draw from] however, i enjoyed the challenge of trying to compare the knowledge of anatomical structures, with the placement of negative space to try to capture the figure. The very last drawing in the bottom right is my favourite of this bunch, i am very pleased with how i was able to capture her face which is also something i struggled with last time we did life drawing. I think next week i will try using my left hand to draw again, not only does it help take the strain off of my other hand and allow me to rest it, but also i think getting myself comfortable with not getting lost in the details and being comfortable to make mistakes will help my poses look less stiff in the long run.
