Life Drawing 3

 1 Minute Warmup Sketches -

For these first few sketches I went back to using my left hand again as i really liked how my drawings turned out last time. Much like last time too, i found it tricky starting out and my lines were very rough and shaky. Of these sketches i like the second and last ones best as i think they're quite gestural in nature and capture the movement well.

3 Minute Sketches -

We then moved onto 3 minute in which i alternated between drawing the quick gestural sketch with my left hand and going back in to darken and strengthen my lines to give a more readable silhouette. In these 3 minute sketches we also did an exercise in which we drew in 5 points to abstract the shape of the model, then cut out the negative space to reveal the figure within, I found this quite challenging to do but i can see how useful it is to abstract overall forms to help push the pose of the model further.

Weapon Sketches -

This is a compilation of the 3 minute weapon studies we did, i used the previous technique of creating a gestural drawing first then going back in to add details, I also decided i wanted to focus on the arms, hands and upper torsos of these models as this is something i struggle with. I also think it is important to understand how the arms and hands change depending on the shape and weight of the object the subject is holding. as we only had a few minutes with these they are quite rough and i am not the most happy with them, but i think i did capture elements of the overall posture. To make this better in the future i think i may work a bit bigger and really zoom in my focus on the arms and hands.

Gesture Sketches -

These sketches are all 1 minute gesture sketches, I tried focusing more on the rhythm and the alternating curves of the figure rather than blocking in any structures. I really like the last two drawings, i think the standing one shows good use of contrapposto in the hips and shoulders, and twist within the back region, and i think the last one there is a definite curve through the spine and up into the leg.

10 Minute Sketch -

The very last sketch we did was a 10 minute sketch in which i tried adding in some shading as well as focusing more on the hands. I really like this sketch, i think the face looks much better than my first attempt in week 1 and the shading i added, although minimal, really helps define the forms and curves of the figure better. Looking at others work in my class i really like how other students can capture the shading on the model so accurately and this is something i really want to work on in my own work.
