Capstone Project - Client Card : Obie the Fearful
Mood Boards-
The next client I created was Obie the Fearful, who prioritizes Comfort and Safety.
For their design I wanted them to feel very bulky and cozy, with a lot of fur accents, layers and padding to make them feel very secure. In my moodboard I collected images of clothing that fit this very "bundled up" look to it, i especially like the poncho on the bottom left [second image] especially the colours on it. I think as both Gremmie and Grug have more warm colours making up the majority of their colour pallet, i want Obie to have more cool toned colours to make them stand out in the lineup. I also added an image of a Pachycephalosaurus skeleton [ a type of hard headed dinosaur] as I thought it would be interesting to implement the skull of this somewhere in my design, as one of my peers mentioned later on "acting as a type of prehistoric hard hat".
Thumbnails-
My first set of thumbnails explored these ideas further, I tried to implement many layers and different textures to give them a bundled up look, it was difficult to not make them look too modern in terms of history as i thought design number 5,6 and 9 had clothing styles that leant too far into modern fashion to make them identifiable as a caveman. Personally i really like designs 2 and 4, however I think design number 2 feels more like a hunter wearing their trophy than someone who is quite fearful, in term's of Obie's character, they would probably be afraid of the hat of number 2. Number 4 borrows some outfit themes i explored in both Grug and Gremmie's thumbnails and I think it fits their personality well. At this point i asked my peers for some advice on which design they liked best.
Feedback -
Most of my peers agreed that number 4's design fit the description of Obie's preferences best, however one of my peers recommended me to try emulating the look of a "prehistoric hard hat" which I thought was a great idea. This is where the Pachycephalosaurus comes in, as I used the skull as a hat. I love this design choice, its very whimsical and very fitting to their character. I also wanted to give one of the cavepeople a skull hat [as previously seen in the Grug thumbnails] so it was good to finally implement that into one of the designs.
Thumbnails 2-
Here are some more variations on designs, I was already pretty happy with the overall silhouette of them so I didn't feel like I needed to explore as many options as I had for my previous cavepeople. I created 2 additional iterations, a version of the skull hat with a shawl, and a version with more layered garments. I fear design 2's tunic design is too complex for the prehistoric period, making it feel more medieval, however design number 3 has a nice array of textures and generally feels more bulky, which helps with the theme of comfort.
Here are some colour iterations too, I ended up going with a combination of 1 and 3, with the saturated blues on the hat of 1 [also the hair] and the grays of design number 3, which were colour picked from both Gremmie and Grug to keep Obie tied in with them.
Feedback 2-
My peers also agreed that number 3 had the best design of the lineup, for most of the same reasons that I gave. This was the design I chose in the end.
Final card -
I made a couple of layouts for the card design, It was much easier to be able to select what I wanted as I had already made a sort of template with the Grug the stylish card I made. I used the layout as a reference and tried to stick to designs that portrayed a more "character portrait" shot, or just a simple bust shot of the character. Of these designs I really liked 1,2 and 3 however looking at how I made the Grug card, design number 3 did not fit the specification that I had made. It did not put emphasis on the character however focused more on the mammoth in the background, with that being said, I do think i might re-use this card for the action card designs in the future, as I have one that relates to a mammoth stampede. For my final card design I combined elements of designs 1 and 2 to create a more dynamic pose.
I also thought it would be funny to put a creature onto the card that Obie was freaking out about, I chose the Meganeura, a giant species of dragonfly, as I too think I would freak out if one of these landed on me.

Here is the sketch for the final card, I gave Obie quite an exaggerated expression to really lean into their "Fearful" title. I have the frame, icons and background [seen later] elements saved as separate layers so that the process of making the final cards is much faster. When it comes to actually formatting these cards, I will just need to adjust the white bleed within my formatting software, either Scribus or InDesign, to ensure that no details on my cards get cut off.
Here is the final design, minus the final icons that I will substitute into the drawing. It is to note that I used the measurements of poker to put my canvas in the right aspect ratio, the cards themselves being 63.5 x 89 mm in size, I did make the actual size of my canvas a bit bigger than that however to make sure that the resolution of my drawing remained high quality, this should be fine as I will scale the cards down in InDesign at the end of the project. A higher resolution also means the quality of the art on the final cards will be better.
I really love how this card came out, I think the cool colour pallet of Obie and the warm colour pallet of the bug make the two subjects easy to see, and the grey rock detailing is still visible on a cooler toned character which is very good to see [i was worried it wouldn't look very good]. I am also just very happy with how Obie looks in general, at the moment I think they're my favourite of the characters I have designed as their general design reflects really well on their name.
Trello -
This post adds to MLO5 and while it wasn't in my plans this week to complete it was the only task I was able to get done finished and posted as I have been quite busy. At the time this post is up on my blog it is to note that I am currently working on designing some furniture cards to add to my lineup of all the card types. I am setting myself a deadline that I want to get a prototype done by the end of next week, and to have tested it at least once. I have a better Idea of how many cards I will need in my game and what those card types are so I want to see if my idea will work before I get too far into designing characters. With that being said, I am glad I made another client card to see how my layout looks, I'm very happy with the final product so I think I will keep using this layout in the future.
