Capstone Project - Client Card : Aloe the Rich

 Mood board -

For Aloe the rich I had a very strong idea that she would be a sort of rich old lady type, wearing big fur coats or toga style clothing. I also think she would have a fancy hat made of some sort of prehistoric creature or fauna that resembles a fascinator. Below are some images that inspired the look of Aloe, mostly relating to her outfit.

I did a little bit of visual research into some design elements to incorporate into her outfit, mostly regarding interesting fur types and some flowers I could use. The image of the flower below is one of the earliest flowers in researched history, closely resembling a Magnolia flower, I thought this could be a nice addition to her fascinator hat. Below that is a sketch of an American Lion or Panthera Atrox which had an interesting cheetah like print, this fit well with her fancy characteristic as she would wear very expensive looking pelts. Finally I also included an image of a Pterodactyl as you can later see I incorporated the head into a 1940s inspired tilt hat.

These are some of my initial concepts, I created two versions of her face one being much more aged than the other to see which I liked best. I think the older look not only fits the rich old lady theming, but also sets her apart from the other clients better. Of these designs I really liked 1, 2 and 8, I particularly think the hairstyle of 8 [longer and loosely tied back] makes her look more like a Neanderthal as it is not heavily styled like the other hair options. I really love the lion pelt detail on her shoulder, it feels very whimsical whilst also true to her rich characteristic, as exotic taxidermy is usually associated with wealth.

Although I like the concept of the pterodactyl tilt hat, I don't think it fits as well as the fern headpiece. This felt very 1920s inspired, so I sort of shifted my focus to that era instead of the 1940-50s.

Feedback -

My peers seemed to agree that the lion pelt scarf was a unique and eye catching design, however unlike my thoughts on the hat of number 7 many of them actually really liked this design.

Several of my peers suggested me to do some designs more fitting with the 1920's look, especially when it comes to the hair. One of my friends sent me this image in particular which I think fits Aloe's vibe very well.

One of my peers also suggested me to take inspiration from a Deadlock character by the name of Lady Gheist, which also fits the look I was going for for Aloe.

Taking this feedback into consideration, I made some iterations on my outfit with more 1920's inspired hairstyles, also adding a band to connect to the fern detail to make it read better as a headband. I really like this detail, it's subtle but really links it into that time period.

Feedback -

In my final round of feedback, my peers suggested me to combine designs 2 and 3, with the hairstyle of 3 and the headband of 2. I agree this looks the best of all the options, so this was the design I chose in the end.

Final card -

Drawing up some card layouts, I wanted Aloe to have a very graceful and elegant pose, making her seem very classy and embodying her wealthy characteristic. Of these designs I really like 1 and 4, the pose is nice and feels very graceful, however looking at the props she was holding I didn't think they looked very prehistoric, and so it made her seem more of an individual from the 20's dressing as a caveman as opposed to the other way around. Its a small detail, but especially with the hand fan it can make a world of difference to making my characters feel at least somewhat grounded in their time frame.
With this in mind, I made a few iterations for how the fan might work in the universe of hotel bunga, which of course has a bit more complex constructions of items than in real life but still utilizes materials that would have been found in the Neolithic period. I really like the design of number 2, I think it feels more sturdy than 3 and 4 and the branch handles give her more of a distinguished look than the bones. I don't imagine Aloe would do any sort of hunting for herself, so the use of flora over fauna gives her more of a relaxed and leisurely feel as opposed to the use of more animal parts which might tie her to a hunter profession.

Here is the final card using my chosen sketch and fan design. I really like  how this turned out, I love her pose and how well she fits with her title. I think the silly expression of the tiger also adds a lot to the card and makes her seem like quite a charming and eccentric individual.

Here is the final formatted card, you can see she doesn't fully fit within the card but that doesn't matter as she more than covers the bleed margins.

I now have only 2 Client cards to complete before this section of the project is finished, I still have a goal of creating the furniture card backgrounds to get my two designs onto those final cards as after that I should be able to create more of those card types very quickly. I think I may have to give myself a little more time on my timeline [around an extra week] to get my tasks done, making room to work a bit on Jordan's work, but I still feel confident I will be able to get everything done on time. I want to get all the Client cards done by next week to complete this part of my game and move onto the employees and furniture cards.
