Capstone Project - Client Card : Kipp the Pretty and Skribb the Crazy

 Mood Board -

Kipp the Pretty is the second to last client that I designed. I wanted her to be very well accessorized, utilizing Neolithic bead and bone necklaces in her design. I imagine her to be quite elegant and have some floral elements in her outfit giving her an almost bridal look.

Here is my set of thumbnails containing ideas from my mood board above. Of these designs I really like the hair of design 8,2 and 6 and I really like her flower crown as I think the use of flowers fits well with the "pretty" theme. For her clothing I wanted her to wear a dress, but unlike Aloe's dress, Kipps will have more of a youthful "Summer dress" appearance as opposed to a gown. This gives her a younger appearance to Aloe [as not to have her be associated with wealth] whilst also making her overall design feel more bright, bubbly and approachable, as her beauty is not just in her appearance but also her personality.

I loved the idea of giving Kipp vitiligo as I think this is a feature that some people can feel quite self conscious about, and I think giving it to a character that is supposed to be the embodiment of beauty might be a nice way to represent people with this feature.

Feedback -

Asking my peers for feedback on my designs, number 6 seemed to be the most popular. I think as none of the other clients have short hair, this makes her feel more unique, and the pixie cut lends itself to her bubbly personality in my opinion. I also got some feedback that the vitiligo was a nice touch.

With this in mind, I combined design number 6 with the dress cut of number 2.

Thumbnails 2 -

I originally wanted to give her the orange tiger print dress as it fit the best with her warm colour pallet, however as I had her holding some magnolia flowers in her final card which have the same light colour as the middle part of her dress, they got a little lost in her design. I decided to go with the wolf pelt dress as it made the flowers stand out the best.

Final Card -

For the final card, I thought design number 2 fit the best with the card's UI composition, although I liked design number 4 the best sadly the UI elements would have cut off a large portion of her lower half.
As you can see, the thylacine pelt dress had a large white section that made many of the elements on her hard to see. Just the sheer amount of the cream colour in this image sort of made her a bit amorphous and unpleasant to look at.

With the wolf fur, the shape of her dress is more defined and her necklace, fur accent, flowers and pom pom are more visible.

Here is how the card looks on the mock up, I really love this card as the flowers give a lot of visual interest to the piece.

And here is the formatted card.

Skribb the Crazy -

Mood board -

The last Client is Skribb the crazy, who is an eccentric fellow who makes cave paintings. I imagine him to be a bit of a crazy old man type, but someone who is highly creative and outgoing. This is sort of a reference to one of the items in the game being a painting made by him. I thought it would be interesting to try to translate a painter's overalls into caveman fashion, where instead of paint staining the garments, he would be covered in mineral deposits from painting cave walls.

Thumbnails-

Here are my thumbnails for Skribb, I really liked giving him very wild hairstyles that play into his "crazy" characteristic, I also liked the idea of him being covered in "paint" and maybe having some painted hands on him as a nod to cave art, however I noticed after i had drawn design number 7 that having a red handprint on him immediately read as a bloody handprint and combined with his crazy name this was not the image I wanted to paint skribb in. Instead I found changing the red minerals to orange read better as being paint, and combined with a rock canvas on his back, his overall look felt a lot more artist-like. For this reason I liked the overalls of designs 6 and 7, the paint stains of 5 and 7 and I also thought it good to put a paintbrush somewhere on his design.

Feedback -

The feedback for Skribb brought up a point I had not thought about, one of my peers suggested I should change his name to make it more obvious to his role as "crazy" is a bit vague. They suggested to change it to Skribb the wild or skribb the tortured artist, I think the last suggestion wouldnt really fit as most children would not know what that title means and may assume "tortured" in the literal sense [also it is just a bit long for the naming conventions in this game]. I think me personally, I didn't really see an issue with his name as I wanted him to be a bit of a crazy old man type in the sense hes a bit wacky and eccentric, however it is something I will think on. With my formatting software, it is easy enough to change the text on the cards so I can always alter it if a better name comes to mind.

Final card -

For his final card I decided to have Skribb facing the player and painting onto the card, breaking the 4th wall and adding to his "Crazy" personality. I'm really happy with this decision as it makes his card super unique and also adds a bit of personality to the character.

With this complete, this finished off all of the client cards! I'm super proud of how all these turned out, I think they look great and each one has so much personality in them. I am excited to see what they will look like on real cards :)

I will have to design the backs of these cards, however I want to leave that until close to the end of the project so I can compare the look of all the cards together.

I am also really glad I went with this art style, I think I am able to get a lot more emotion in this style than if I had gone with the cave painting look. I would however like to incorporate that elsewhere in my project, perhaps on the back of the cards and the box art perhaps?

Trello -

Having completed all of my client cards, this completes a quarter of my project. I still need to work on the employees, Item cards and Action cards as well as the boards and box art however both the item cards and action cards should take significantly less time than the rest of the employees. I will focus on getting my furniture cards done next just to get to that half way mark of this project however I am feeling very confident and happy about this project and the timeline so far. I aim to get the furniture backgrounds and at least 4 more items of furniture designed by the end of next week.
