Capstone Project: Misc Furniture

This set of 4 will cover the Misc category, which consists of furniture items that did not fit a particular room within the cave. There is the wall screamer, Princess, Heated cave and swimming hole.

 Thumbnails -

Wall Screamer -
When making the Wall screamer I was imagining a pterodactyl in either a bird in a cage type situation or similar to those loud mouth bass toys. In Maya I made two designs, one a cage and the other a plaque on a post. In my prototype sketch the wall screamer is attached to the plaque however seeing this in the games final art style felt a bit mean to the pterodactyl so i decided to scrap that idea and go with the cage idea.

I added a sign to the bottom of the cage just to make the design more interesting, the font on it being a custom font i made a little while back.

"Princess" -
I had such a strong idea of what I wanted princess to be, I had this vision of those pitbulls with the spiked collars however instead of a dog it is a T-rex. When it came to drawing princes, I wanted to give her feathers as i have seen a lot of artwork and theories that the T-rex might have had feathers. I am not super informed on dinosaur anatomy or like their speculated appearance so I'm also mainly just choosing this route as i think fluffy dinosaurs are cool, most of Hotel Bunga is entirely non historically accurate so in case i am wrong in my assumption of feathered T-rexes it doesn't really matter. I love how she looks, i think this is such a funny concept of this giant apex predator being domesticated and kept on a leash and just to add insult to injury its owner called it "princess".

Heated cave & Swimming hole -
These two designs are more environment based, with them inferring the actual structure of the cave bnb changes. I think although the heated cave is rather simple in comparison to some of my other designs i think it is effective and is immediately obvious the link between the name and the actual function of the heated cave. As for the Swimming hole, to make it a little more interesting I added in a Brachiosaurus bathing in the water.

When drawing both of these designs I got in a lot of practice with drawing rocks, something that I had previously had some trouble with doing. I found the polygon fill tool really helped in blocking out the rough shapes, then going in with the poly line tool to define the different faces of the rock, following a rough polygonal shape on the top then linking the corners of the shape down to the bottom edge of the rock, occasionally throwing in some chips and cracks in the rock to give a more organic form. This project has been really helpful in building this skill, while its a niche thing to practice i have wanted to learn how to draw rocks better as I really enjoy drawing nature scenes in my free time.

Final cards-

Here are the last 4 misc cards:

These are all the furniture card prototypes! I will still need to make the final formatted versions but this gives a good idea of how the finished cards will look. I am very pleased with these cards and I am so glad I decided to do the backgrounds so that they all link up, its a small detail but really adds a lot to the final look of the cards.

Trello -

This now marks the halfway point of this project! I am super happy with everything I have made so far even though it is very different from my regular art style i am still proud of the cards I have created, i think they fit well with my personal brief of making a game suitable for a younger family audience and fits well with the overall theming of my game.

My next step is to work on my 5 employee designs and format both the furniture and employee cards once they are complete. As both of these cards use a horizontal format, I should be able to create a horizontal template on Scribus/InDesign to use for both applications to speed up the final card creation process.

Looking at my gantt chart I am still on track for getting everything done by the deadline and even though i have more action cards to make than originally anticipated, I still feel confident about getting everything complete.
