Emerging Tech Report -
The first segment of this project involved the research and production of an emerging tech report surrounding my chosen topic, this being 3D modelling. Looking through my findings I was able to find a lot on the history of 3D printing and its various applications, yet had some issues finding specifics to cover in terms of the field of 3D printed miniatures. This report was good practice to write concise yet informative essays on a given topic and whilst I did struggle to condense all my findings down into roughly 1000 words, I feel quite happy with the work that I have done. To improve in the future, I think it would have been a good idea to keep my focus clear right from the beginning of the essay, what I have written seems very generalized and I struggled to refocus my talking points to the realm of miniatures.
Development of my asset-
The asset development section is the part of this project I feel most happy with. Considering my struggles with 3D modelling over my entire time at university [and college] I feel I have improved slightly from what I was able to do last year. I feel that the research I conducted early in this project on identifying the pipeline to create models and make them ready for printing really helped me make something that could successfully be printed. I also feel very happy that i tried something new and gave Zbrush another try. I think my model turned out well for the application i built it for [tabletop games] if not a little small. To improve I would do two things:
- Be a bit more adventurous with my model, i t would have been nice to give her hair and fix her hands so she looks as accurate a as possible.
- Double check the scaling of my model to ensure it is accurate to the sizing of tabletop miniatures.
If I had implemented these two things I would have been even happier with my model, but to say this is my first try at something like this I feel quite proud of my end result.
Time Management -
Throughout this project I used Trello to track what tasks need completing and set myself deadlines to ensure I am on track to submit everything by the summative deadline. I found Trello to be much nicer to use compared to a Gantt chart in this application as I could clearly see what sections had/had not been completed and which tasks I should turn my attention to next. I felt I kept to my deadlines well and I am very glad I started 3D sculpting early into this project else I don't think I would have gotten everything done by the deadline. I personally don't think I would have done anything differently in terms of the amount of time I spend on this module, and I will definitely be reusing Trello in the future.
Overview -
Looking at this project overall, I am so glad I pushed myself out of my comfort zone to try something new. I really enjoyed the process of the 3D Printing pipeline and I would like to try this again in the future. As I would like to work in the tabletop games industry in the future, I think this is a very good skill to learn especially if I would like to go down the route of self publishing games. Something I would do differently and improve on in the future is my academic writing, this is something I feel I am not very strong at and I think working on making the clarity of my writing better would benefit me in the future.
