Capstone Project - Furniture card backgrounds
A while ago I made some mock ups of the furniture cards that I just wasn't happy with. I decided to revisit this with a new idea that I felt much more confident about. I decided, as the furniture cards are separated into 4 groups, each group would have a unique background that when placed together would make a scene of an interior of the cave BnB. This wouldn't add anything to gameplay per se, but just makes the cards more aesthetically pleasing and easier to sort through.
Below are my ideas for 3 of the rooms, the bedroom, lounge and kitchen.
Here is my process for creating one of the backgrounds, I want them to be fairly simple so that they do not detract from the furniture pieces that will be on the cards. To create this canvas I took the dimensions stated on the cards and multiplied the longest edge by four so that my pattern will be tileable.
I have found that the gradient tool is great for making really quick backgrounds as it lays out all your values for you so it is much easier to build depth. I also edit the gradient to give me my horizon line. For the interiors of the cave I want to use warm tones, and for miscellaneous furniture items I want to use cooler tones to make the items easier to differentiate.
The actual interiors take inspiration from the flintstones, combining modern architecture like windows, doors and blinds, with natural structures present within the cave. I also included some firefly string lights and artichoke garlands in my later backgrounds as some little decorative accents that are still believable to have been made by cave people.
This is the bedroom background, I then split it up into the four cards, taking into consideration the amount of bleed. The bleed on these cards is 3mm, so the cards might not tile 100% accurately but I don't think it should be that noticable.

Here is how I split the cards up, as these were all on separate layers I could simply use a clipping mask to separate the design onto the cards, then export those areas as their own image.
Here is how that looks:
Card Mockup -
Adding in the furniture designs I created, I am much much happier with how these cards look. I am very glad I took the time to return to these cards and try something new as I think not only do they look better but it adds to the immersion of the cave renovation mechanic of hotel bunga.
Backgrounds continued -
Here are the other 3 backgrounds. I chose an outdoor scene for the misc items as most of them are outdoor cave decorations.

Now that I have the backgrounds complete for these cards, it will be much easier to put the final assets together much in the same way as the client cards. My next step is to design more furniture to add onto these designs, of which I aim to make 4 more designs by the end of the week.
