Capstone Project: Kitchen Furniture

 Thumbnails -

For this set of 4 cards, these items all relate to a kitchen setting. Below are the prototype cards Juice bar, Anti theft device, Hairy Beanbag and Indoor Jungle wall. I went for items of furniture [except the anti theft device which i just included because i thought it was funny] that would be common to see in a trendy holiday home rather than just regular kitchen appliances. I want the vibe for Hotel Bunga to be renovating a basic cave with fancy furniture items so i wanted the cards to all represent "add ons" that would improve a basic kitchen set up.

Juice Bar -
For most of these furniture items I modelled them first in Maya then drew over the top of them just to cut down on time. I really wanted to get the remaining 8 designs completed this week so this technique allowed me to make them much quicker [whilst also allowing me to work on my 3D skills because i honestly want to give it another try. In the process of this project i have learned so many way to make low poly rocks].

In my prototype sketch, you can see the "glasses" on the bar were made of skulls, I was really contemplating whether or not to have this in my final design however i thought the connotations of having decapitated Neanderthal skulls to drink out of was maybe a bit dark. [the train of thought for the original design was in reference to Neanderthal's occasional cannibalistic nature and the practice of trepanning, however i think thematically and considering my target audience this just wouldnt be the right move]. I think the coconut cups give more of a holidaymaker feel anyways.

Instead of a fridge, I filled a crevasse in the rock with ice and place unopened coconuts within it to emulate the look of a mini fridge. Looking at the card lineups, i wanted the bigger items to be spread equally across the cards, not just on the ends. To make my model look better on the card, I altered the orientation to be facing straight on, that way it looks better on the background on the middle card. [This will be demonstrated further below.]

Anti Theft Device -
The anti theft device is one of my stupider concepts, with the function of it being a big boulder precariously balanced on top of a flimsy stick. Should an intruder walk below it, the boulder will topple and squash any intentions of stealing anything flat [this doesn't actually affect gameplay in any way, i just thought it was a funny idea].

Leaf Wall/Succulent Wall -
I had a lot of fun designing the Leaf wall as i looked into different kinds of prehistoric plants to integrate into the design. Of these two iterations I thought the cycad one [number 1] was much more unique and felt a bit more prehistoric. I was really inspired by succulent walls and used this to construct something that felt a bit more realistic for a Neanderthal to have made, I also reused the coconut motif here to tie it in with the Juice bar.

Hairy Beanbag -
As another addition to the creature inspired items is the Hairy Beanbag, which is a chair made of the pelt of a wooly mammoth. Originally I was just going to have it as a classic beanbag, however when looking at fluffy beanbags I came across these highland cow stools which really inspired be to make a wooly mammoth version. I'm glad I came across this as this design looks so much more interesting and whimsical, i think this would appeal to a younger audience much more than the classic beanbag too. As an extra detail, I also looked into some prehistoric fruits to put in the fruit bowl, a small detail but one that i thought was interesting.

Final Card -

Here are the final prototype cards!

Card back concept -

Once I had finished this set of cards I also created the back for the furniture cards which takes design elements found on the big panel found on the employee cards. Here I re-used my icons I created a while back. I wanted the backs to be quite minimal as not to confuse players, so referring back to my layout thumbnails I slightly modified one of them so that the numbers and icons had more of a clear correlation. I have saved both the front and back layouts as transparent PNGs so I should be able to just import them into my formatting software and really quickly put together the final cards with minimal effort. [I will do this once I have all the designs complete so I can line up the designs accurately].

Trello -

This now marks 4/8 remaining cards! I am feeling confident I will get them all complete by the end of the week and now that I have the card backs too this is one less thing for me to worry about with the final layouts. I aim to keep this pace and get the final 4 cards complete tomorrow. After that, I will focus on the 5 remaining Employee cards before moving onto the action cards and player cards.
