Capstone Project - Lounge Furniture

 Thumbnails -

Here are the four furniture cards relating to the lounge, we have:
- The Priceless Hairy Vase
- Bungavision
- Scaly sit-upon
- Skribbs Top-notch Painting [formerly generated painting but i did not want to portray skribb as being someone who would use "caveman AI" as i previously depicted him as an artist]

As hotel bunga is set in the stone age, I imagined the priceless hairy vase to be made of simple clay or mud as opposed to brass or china as it would be the most realistic material for cavemen to make a vase out of. In Bunga, the word "Hairy" refers to a wooly mammoth, as they would not know the name for a mammoth and instead refer to them as what they are, hairy. The vase is very stylized as i think it makes it very charming, hence why i chose the more snout like look of designs 1-3 even though it appears more pig-like. It sort of reminds me of a piggy bank, which i think is quite cute.

I asked my peers which of these designs they thought was the most charming, with the result being the same as my own opinion. I really liked number 3, i think it lives us the best to its name and is overall just really sweet looking. it reads the best as a wooly mammoth of the top 3 and i think the fluffier body just makes it cute.

For skribb's painting, I referred back to my visual research of cave paintings [including some examples of cave art I saw at Creswell crags] to create some concepts for simple rock paintings. Much like when designing Skribb, I did not use the dark reddish hue for the handprint as I thought that read more so as being a bloody handprint than a painted hand, for this reason, and for the fact the orange wasn't as visible as the darker paintings, I thought the hand wouldn't be a very good option. I though designs 2 and 6 had a more traditional cave painting look whereas designs 3 and 5 merged modern painting subjects [portraits and landscapes] with prehistoric techniques.

By far the most popular design was the painting of "Princess" referencing another card within the game. I think this design fits best with the comedic nature of hotel bunga as a pet T-rex on a lead is quite funny.
The bungavision was the easiest of the card designs to create, I took a lot of inspiration from how the flintstones construct their modern looking furniture items in a way that feels somewhat believable for a caveman to create. I modelled this on maya, opting to choose for a lot of asymmetrical and jagged elements that lend itself to a more stone-like appearance. For the "Aerial" I constructed them to look like branches stuck on top of another rock. Of course the Bungavision wouldn't actually work, instead it just another painted scene on top of a TV shaped rock. I chose my second favourite of the Skribb paintings to use as the image on the screen, making it look like they are watching some sort of hunting show.

The scaly sit-upon is one of the furniture items that revolves around a living creature that is used as a decorative item. In this case, the scaly sit-upon is a Parasaurolophus that is covered with blankets and pillows to resemble a sofa. I re-used the colour palette here from my art style considerations earlier on in this project, opting for a light green colour palette that is a bit more saturated than number 2 [i thought it fit the exaggerated style of bunga much better]. This was a concept that I already had a good idea of what I wanted to do for it, so I didn't feel like I needed to do too many iterations on the design.

Final Card Art -

Here is how I placed the artwork onto the cards, I did increase the saturation and contrast of the Bungavision so that it stood out a little better on the darker background.

And this is how my cards look all lined up:

To keep on track with my goal of getting all my furniture cards completed by the end of march, I intend to create the remaining 8 cards next week. As these furniture items are more simple, I think this is a realistic goal for myself. Once I have all of the furniture cards completed, I will begin the rest of the employee cards as these are the most time consuming of the remaining cards that I have to create. I am still feeling quite good about this project however I think I will need to pick up the pace a bit to ensure I get all my work completed for the deadline.
